EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J., Oct. 6 (UPI) -- Priest Holmes caught a short pass from Trent Green and took it 19 yards for a touchdown with 27 seconds left Sunday to give the Kansas City Chiefs a 29-25 win over the New York Jets.
Kansas City (3-2), which has scored 85 points in the fourth quarter in five games this season, trailed by three with 2:54 left in the fourth after New York's John Hall kicked a 25-yard field goal.
"We've been pretty successful with the fourth quarter. We've been able to put some points up," Green said. "We were moving the ball today, we just weren't getting the touchdowns. We knew we were in field goal range and we wanted to go into the end zone. They sent everybody deep, and he (Holmes) was the third option."
Holmes rushed for 152 yards on 23 carries and a touchdown while catching nine passes for 81 yards and the game-winning score. His two touchdowns gave him 10 through the first five games of the season, matching his career high set last year.
Green completed 23 of 33 passes for 196 yards and two scores while throwing one interception.
"Trent did a good job taking us down the field and putting the ball in people's hands. We've been good in the fourth quarter all year," Kansas City Coach Dick Vermeil said. "If you're gonna be a playoff team, you have to beat teams that have been to the playoffs. We're very fortunate to have won the game, but when you play like we did for four quarters, you've got a chance."
Chad Pennington started his first NFL game and tossed his first two career touchdown passes while Curtis Martin rushed for his first 100-yard game and first touchdown of the season for the Jets (1-4), who suffered their fourth straight loss.
"The game of football is about emotion. It's bittersweet because we made progress, but we'd like to make progress with wins," Pennington said. "The NFL is about establishing the run and we were able to do that today."
"We got beat, but we didn't lose 44-7 or 30-3. They just found a way to come out with the win," Martin said. "Chad played great. There was a lot of pressure on him, but we played better. We know we have something to build on. We feel like we're just about over that hump."
Pennington's favorite target was Laveranues Coles, who got more looks with Wayne Chrebet sidelined with a bruised knee and caught eight passes for 116 yards.
"Chad did a nice job for his first start. Curtis ran the ball pretty well," Jets Coach Herman Edwards said. "It was one of those games where we felt we had to score points and the offense did that. We were in the game in the fourth quarter and we just gave up some big plays at the end. We're not playing good enough defense and it showed up in the fourth quarter when we needed a stop."
Pennington completed 23 of 30 passes for 245 yards and two touchdowns with one interception. In the fourth quarter, he completed 10 consecutive passes and 166 of his passing yards came in the second half.
"Pennington did a nice job," Vermeil added. "I think they found out they are a pretty good team."
Santana Moss caught five passes for 65 yards, including his first career touchdown. That came on a 27-yard pass from Pennington that capped a 12-play, 89-yard drive early in the fourth quarter and put the Jets ahead, 22-15.
