EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J., Aug. 10 (UPI) -- Second-year running back Antonio Warren, trying to find playing time in a crowded
backfield, broke free for a 30-yard touchdown run with 4:22 remaining Saturday night to boost the New York Giants past the defending Super Bowl champion New England Patriots, 22-19.
Warren capped a big night by reversing his field on his scoring burst and shredding the heart of the Patriots' defense.
The 26-year-old Warren, who is listed third on the depth chart behind starter Tiki Barber and former Heisman Trophy winner Ron Dayne, carried 10 times for 63 yards.
Giants first-round draft pick Jeremy Shockey caught two passes for 39 yards and running back Sean Bennett, who is battling Warren for playing time, had eight carries for 32 yards and six catches for 56 yards.
Backup quarterback Jesse Palmer completed 13 of 19 passes for 124 yards for the Giants, who improved to 2-0 in the exhibition season.
The Patriots got a big effort from their backup quarterback, Damon Huard, who was 13 of 17 for 118 yards and a touchdown.
New England's first-round pick, tight end Daniel Graham, who is nursing a knee injury, and wide receiver Troy Brown both missed the game with injuries. But in Brown's absence, second-round pick Deion Branch had a big night, hauling in eight passes for 129 yards.
Patriots starting quarterback Tom Brady was seven of 11 for 104 yards.
New England also got four field goals -- including a 50-yarder on the final play of the first half -- from Super Bowl hero Adam Vinatieri.
