Els joins select group

GULLANE, Scotland, July 21 (UPI) -- Ernie Els has made it clear his chief golfing goal is to win the career Grand Slam.

Among those currently under the age of 50, Els is as close to doing so as anyone with the exception of the player who has already achieved that feat.

When he won the British Open in 2000, Woods completed the career slam. He has since added four more major titles while dominating the sport.

Eight other players under the age of 50 have now won two of the four events that make up the Grand Slam.

With his victory Sunday in the British Open, Els joined John Daly, Nick Price, Vijay Singh, Mark O'Meara, Nick Faldo, Sandy Lyle and Seve Ballesteros as players halfway to the slam.

Of that group, all but Singh have won the British Open. Ballesteros, 45, has seen his game deteriorate to the point that he withdrew from this year's tournament.

Other than Woods, the players to win the Masters, U.S. Open, British Open and PGA Championship during a career have been Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player.
