Ferrero ousted in Switzerland

GSTAAD, Switzerland, July 11 (UPI) -- Second-seeded Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero and No. 4 Andrei Pavel of Romania became the latest seeds to fall in the Swiss Open Thursday.

Ferrero, who reached the final at the French Open and lost in the second round at Wimbledon, was ousted by countryman David Sanchez, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3, in the second round of the claycourt event.

Wild card Marc Rosset of Switzerland posted a 7-5, 7-6 (7-1) victory over Pavel and will face seventh seed Gaston Gaudio in the quarterfinals.

Gaudio, the highest remaining seed, got past Russian Mikhail Youzhny, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4.

In the final second-round match, eighth-seeded Spaniard Alex Corretja defeated countryman Felix Mantilla, 6-4, 6-4. Corretja, who won this event in 1998 and 2000, is playing in his first tournament since the French Open and next faces Sanchez.

Mantilla, who won this tournament in 1997, fell to 2-4 lifetime against Corretja.

On Wednesday, Czech qualifier Radek Stepanek posted a second-round upset of the third-seeded Roger Federer of Switzerland, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Stepanek is in his fourth ATP quarterfinal of the year and faces Hungarian Attila Savolt. The 23-year-old Stepanek also made the last eight at Doha and Estoril, and the semifinals at Munich in April.

Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia will face Galo Blanco of Spain in the other quarterfinal match. Blanco beat French qualifier Paul-Henri Mathieu, who upset top-seeded Spaniard Albert Costa in the first round. Costa was playing for the first time since defeating Ferrero in the French Open final.
