Kansas City 4, Cleveland 2 (1st game)

CLEVELAND, May 18 (UPI) -- Mark Quinn broke a ninth-inning tie with an RBI double Saturday as the Kansas City Royals defeated the Cleveland Indians for the fifth straight time, 4-2, in the first game of a day-night doubleheader.

Joe Randa opened the ninth with a double off Bob Wickman (0-1). Quinn squared to bunt and missed for the second strike before lining a 1-2 pitch that went off the glove of right fielder Matt Lawton for his fourth hit in as many career at-bats against Wickman.

A.J. Hinch drove in the second run of the inning with a fielder's choice grounder.

Wickman suffered his first loss since Sept. 28, 2000 against Minnesota.

Dan Reichert (2-4) pitched three hitless innings for the win, allowing just one baserunner on an error by third baseman Randa. Roberto Hernandez worked the ninth for his fourth save.

The Indians had tied the game with two runs in the fifth. Omar Vizquel walked and Jolbert Cabrera, Travis Fryman and Ellis Burks followed with singles. But Cleveland failed to break it open as Russell Branyan struck out with the bases loaded to end the inning.

The Indians also loaded the bases with two outs in the second but Vizquel grounded into a force play.

Carlos Febles helped manufacture a run for Kansas City in the third when he walked, stole second and came home on a bloop single to center by Neifi Perez.

The Royals increased the lead to 2-0 in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Chuck Knoblauch.

Cleveland starter C.C. Sabathia put a frightening day behind him with six strong innings in which he allowed two runs and three hits with four walks and four strikeouts. Sabathia was robbed at gunpoint at a Cleveland hotel on Friday morning.

Royals starter Jeremy Affeldt lasted five innings, allowing seven hits.
