DALLAS, Nov. 10 (UPI) -- David Carr threw for four touchdowns and 292 yards Saturday to give Fresno State its second straight triumph with a 38-13 victory over Southern Methodist.
The Mustangs (2-6, 2-4 Western Athletic Conference) opened a 10-0 lead after one quarter on a 32-yard interception return for a touchdown by defensive back Kevin Garrett. It was just the fourth interception thrown by Carr this season.
But he bounced back with a nine-yard touchdown toss to Marque David and a 65-yard scoring pass to Rodney Wright for a 14-10 lead. Jacob Crowley's 38-yard field goal pulled SMU within 14-13 at halftime, but the Mustangs were blanked in the second half.
Fresno State (8-2, 4-2) extended its lead on a 35-yard pass from Carr to Bernard Berrian with 6:54 left in the third quarter. Carr then hooked up with Rodney Wright in the fourth for a 22-yard touchdown with 12:54 remaining and a 31-13 lead.
Carr completed 25 of 37 passes, but just missed registering his seventh 300-yard passing game of the season. Wright had seven receptions for 91 yards while Berrian caught four for 72 yards.
Freshman ShanDerrick Charles rushed 17 times of 96 yards for the Mustangs, but David Page completed just 15 of 29 for just 104 yards. SMU was outgained, 371 yards to 200.
Fresno State pulled within one game of Louisiana Tech in the WAC race. The Bulldogs had climbed as high as 10th in the coaches' poll in October, but dropped out of the rankings with consecutive losses to Boise State and Hawaii.
