New Jersey 100, New York, 84

ALBANY, N.Y., Oct. 25 (UPI) -- Kenyon Martin scored 21 points and Jason Kidd fell two points shy of a triple-double Thursday night as the New Jersey Nets downed the New York Knicks, 100-84.

Martin, who has rebounded from a broken leg that prematurely ended his rookie season, made nine of 13 shots from the floor and overpowered New York defenders in the paint.

Kidd put on a show with eight points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists. He made four of eight shots and recorded three steals for New Jersey (3-3), which shot 49 percent from the floor.

The Nets opened the second half with a 17-3 run, turning a six-point halftime lead into a 70-50 cushion with 6:27 left in the third quarter. Keith Van Horn scored seven points during the decisive stretch and Kerry Kittles added six.

Van Horn finished with 11 points and four rebounds and Kittles had 12 and five.

Todd MacCulloch scored 14 points and rookie Richard Jefferson had 15 points, six rebounds and four assists off the bench.

Rookie Brian Scalabrine had eight points, four rebounds and four assists in 27 minutes and rookie Brandon Armstrong scored six points in 21 minutes.

Allan Houston scored 24 points for New York, which shot just 41 percent and committed 19 turnovers. Othella Harrington was the only other Knick in double figures with 14 points.
