Henman moves into quarterfinals

BASEL, Switzerland, Oct. 25 (UPI) -- Second-seeded Tim Henman of Britain eased into the quarterfinals of the Swiss Indoors Thursday with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Andrea Gaudenzi of Italy.

Henman, a 1998 winner and 1999 runner-up here, reached his second successive quarterfinal after last week's final eight at the Tennis Masters Series event in Stuttgart. He has made it to the semifinals at Basel every year he has played.

However, Henman needs to reach at least the semis to qualify for the season-ending Masters Cup in Sydney, where only the top eight in the world are invited. His next foe is upset-minded Michel Kratochvil of Switzerland.

Henman has only one title this year, at Copenhagen in March. Gaudenzi won two clay tournaments in 2001 but was overmatched on carpet against Henman.

Fourth seed and 2000 runner-up Roger Federer of Switzerland beat Belgium's Xavier Malisse, 6-3, 6-4. Malisse had won the previous two meetings.

Kratochvil upset fifth seed Arnaud Clement of France, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (8-6), while sixth-seeded American Andy Roddick posted a 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) win over Yugoslavian qualifier Nenad Zimonjic.

No. 7 Carlos Moya of Spain bounced French qualifier Nicolas Thomann, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4, and lucky loser Nikolay Davydenko of Russia upset local favorite Marc Rosset, 7-5, 6-1.

In the round of eight, Federer faces Roddick and Moya meets Davudenko, who was added to the draw after Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras withdrew.

George Bastl became the second Swiss in the quarters after edging Bohdan Ulihrach of the Czech Republic, 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-1). His quartefinal foe will be Frenchman Julien Boutter.
