ARLINGTON, Va., Oct. 5 (UPI) -- Unmanned Navy boats could be traversing the seas within a year, and they're featured in this new video from the U.S. Navy.
Like driverless cars, the boats use algorithms, advanced computer programs and sensors to determine how to navigate the sea and how to coordinate their efforts.

Any Navy boat can theoretically be equipped to become autonomous.
The Navy is testing the systems to watch how they work as a group. They can even surround enemy ships to deter them from advancing into restricted waters.
The boats may move on their own, but their weapon systems are operated remotely by humans.
