KAMPALA, Uganda, Dec. 7 (UPI) -- Ugandan lawmakers will be given iPads at taxpayer expense -- the latest in a string of costly perks that's aggravated voters, opposition leaders said.
The iPads will cost $370,000 to purchase but government officials said the savings in paper and copying, which will no longer be necessary when official documents are distributed electronically, will eventually make the devices a cost-savings for the public.
The BBC said voters in the African country weren't so sure they agreed with the idea.
"Taxpayers are already paying too much to take care of their MPs," opposition MP Semujju Ibrahim Nganda said.
Ugandan lawmakers -- there are 375 in the nation's parliament -- already gave themselves a salary increase of 38 percent, to about $8,000 a month. They also allotted themselves $41,000 each to buy a car.
