The State University of New York, the University of Tennessee, the Tennessee Board of Regents, University of Colorado system, University of Houston system, University of Kentucky, University of Nebraska, University of New Mexico, University System of Georgia and West University System have announced a partnership with the provider of online education resources, Coursera said in a release.

The schools' participation with Coursera may be more of an effort to boost online coursework at their own campuses and less to appeal to worldwide audiences, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The schools will use Coursera's online open course video and testing platform to bolster blended classrooms in which a traditional class would be supplemented by online resources, Coursera's release stated.

University of New Mexico Provost Chaouki Abdallah said he sees the partnership with Coursera boosting online credit hours at the school by 10 percent, up from the current 15 percent.

"I don't know how this is going to end up," he said. "I am looking at it as an experiment."
