Nike, Apple iPod package courts runners

NEW YORK, May 24 (UPI) -- Apple Computer Inc. and Nike announced a new iPod Nano in New York that lets users track miles run and calories burned while listening to tunes.

Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong, who is preparing for his first New York marathon, joined the Tuesday announcement and provides audio advice for Nike+iPod users.

The $29 kit includes a shoe sensor and a wireless receiver for the iPod Nano.

"Nike+iPod creates a better running experience," said Nike Chief Executive Officer Mark Parker.

"The result is like having a personal coach or training partner motivating you every step of your workout," said Apple Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs.

The Nike+iPod kit hits stores in late June, followed by the mid-July release of Nike's Air Zoom Moire -- a $100 pair of shoes with a sensor-holding pocket, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

Apple's hot-selling iPod holds 80 percent of the U.S. MP3 player market, said the market research firm NPD Group.
