June 7 (UPI) -- Authorities in southwestern Germany responded to an unusual situation when police received several calls about a loose elephant on city streets.

Police in Neuwied, Rhineland-Palatinate, said officers were dispatched Wednesday when shocked onlookers reported an elephant wandering around in the Berggarten Street area.

Social media users captured video of the elephant running loose in a road and loitering around some local businesses and homes.

Police arrived to find keepers from a visiting circus working to recapture the African elephant, named Kenia.

At least one busy road was temporarily closed by police while the trainers worked to calm the pachyderm and lead it back to the circus.

No injuries or property damage were reported from the elephant's time on the loose.
