June 4 (UPI) -- A crayfish in China has a new life as a pet after severing its own claw to escape being boiled alive in a hot pot.

A video that was originally posted to Weibo by user Juike before going viral on Facebook shows the crawdad climbing out of the pot and finding that one of its claws is trapped in the water.

The footage shows the mudbug sever its own claw to escape from the boiling water.

Juike said he was impressed by the crustacean's desire to live and decided to keep the crayfish in an aquarium as his pet.

Experts said crayfish are able to regrow severed limbs.
