Nov. 15 (UPI) -- A Pennsylvania police department is waiving citations for some minor traffic violations to encourage residents to donate toys for the holidays.

The St. Marys City Police Department announced on Facebook the 2017 St. Marys Cops for Kids Program involves officers handing out flyers instead of some citations for minor traffic offenses.

The flyers call on the recipients to drop off toys at the police department instead of paying fines.

"In the spirit of the holidays, we are waiving the issuance of a citation, in hopes that you will drop off an unwrapped toy to our Police Department," the flyers read. "All toys will go to benefit Project Gifts for Elk County. On behalf of the Saint Marys City Police Department, have safe and happy holidays!!!"

Police said they are also happy to accept donations from residents who have not been stopped for traffic violations.
