"When you think the rain washed a huge rock into the highway, then find out it's a 20-pound snapping turtle!" police said.

Jennifer Churchill of Colorado Parks & Wildlife told CBS Denver snapping turtles are common in Colorado, but are typically found near bodies of water and not roadways.

The turtle was eventually turned in to local law enforcement, who released it back into the wild.

"This big guy was released in a safe place unharmed," police said.
