Raccoon gives birth in back of convertible in Florida

July 14 (UPI) -- Animal rescuers were called to a Florida auto shop for an unusual situation -- a pregnant raccoon had broken into a convertible and given birth in the back seat.

The Wildlife Inc. Education and Rehabilitation Center posted photos to Facebook showing the scene rescuer Devon Straight was confronted with when he was summoned by employees at an auto detailing shop on U.S. 301 in Manatee County.

The post said the mother raccoon got into the vehicle through a plastic cover over one of the windows.

"It was quite an interesting and challenging rescue," Straight told the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. "It's just one of those calls that's different and stands out."

Straight said one newborn trash panda was found in the back seat of the car, and another was found in the trunk.

"I felt pretty bad for the owner of the car," Straight said. "They tore up the sun shades, chewed some shoes and peed all over the place."

Straight said the mother and babies were safely released in a wooded area away from humans -- and cars.
