June 8 (UPI) -- Animal Services workers in a Texas town said they are having trouble capturing a German shepherd that has been living in a storm drain for about six months.

Neighbors in Grand Prairie said the dog, which they dubbed Cassie, has been living in the drain for about six months, but doesn't seem to be distressed.

"I felt like someone was looking at me, and I looked back, and his head was right there," neighbor Michelle Chargois told WFAA-TV. "The story is that he kind of likes to live down there!"

Grand Prairie Animal Services said the dog's predicament has been reported numerous times in recent months.

"It's good that we got the attention, but we also need people to understand that we do have it under control," said Danielle Tate, Grand Prairie's Animal Services manager.

"He pops his head out of the drain and then smiles, looks at you and watches people as they go by," Tate told The Huffington Post. "He's not stuck, not in any danger. He can come and go at his leisure."

Tate said Cassie doesn't appear to be trapped in the drain and has been seen coming and going from its subterranean home. She said the problem is Cassie's mistrust of rescuers.

"We haven't been able to catch him. He takes off and runs," Tate said.

Tate said Animal Services is working with one neighbor to earn the dog's trust with food. Other residents are being asked to keep their distance from Cassie.

"He pops his head out of the drain and then smiles, looks at you and watches people as they go by," Tate told The Huffington Post. "He's not stuck, not in any danger. He can come and go at his leisure."
