Britain's 'Fridgehenge' welcomes solstice with refrigerators

MAIDSTONE, England, June 22 (UPI) -- A British appliance store owner celebrated the summer solstice by creating "Fridgehenge," a Stonehenge-inspired monument made from refrigerators.

Kevin Wildeman, 53, owner of the Extra Mile appliance business located above The Clutter Box thrift store in Maidstone, said he and friend Paul Stone constructed Fridgehenge as an alternative to the tradition of visiting Stonehenge for the summer solstice.

"I thought it would be a good idea given the solstice was coming, so I went out at 3 a.m. and built it using about 30 fridges lying around in the yard," Wildeman told Kent Online. "It took about three hours and I had to ask Paul for help as it was quite hard work. It's fully bolted down."

Wildeman said he has not decided how long to leave Fridgehenge in place.

"I don't know when it will be taken down, it depends on what the council think," he said. "The first person who walked past said it was an eyesore but everyone else has been really positive."

Photos of the sculpture were shared on social media by amused solstice revelers using the hashtag "#fridgehenge."
