RINGWOOD, N.J., July 1 (UPI) -- A 6-month-old black bear cub in Ringwood, N.J., had to be rescued on Friday night, after he was caught up a tree with his head stuck in a jar.

Officials said they had to help the hungry cookie-lover, who must have found the large plastic jar of animal crackers in the trash.

"He was trying to eat what remained in the jar and pulled the jar over his head," said New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection spokesman Larry Ragonese. "He got spooked and went up into the tree."

Workers from the Department of Environmental Protection climbed up the tree, tranquilized the bear and brought him back down to safety. Then they cut the jar off of his head.

Black bears are the largest land mammals in New Jersey.
