RENO, Nev., April 26 (UPI) -- At least four busloads of Reno, Nev., students got to Six Flags Marine World near San Francisco only to find the park closed.

"It was pretty much a fiasco," Washoe County, Nev., school spokesman Steve Mulvenon told the Reno Gazette of the Monday trip. "They ended up wasting a day."

The episode was reminiscent of the Chevy Chase comedy "National Lampoon's Vacation" -- in which a family drives across the country to go to Wally World, only to find the park is closed for repairs when they get there.

O'Brien (Nev.) Middle School officials blamed the bus operator for failing to check Six Flags' schedule, while some parents blamed the school for not making certain the park was open that day.

Each student's $50 fee will be refunded and the bus company will pay for the next trip, officials said.

Eighth-grader Sara Beckman had the take-home message.

"If you are planning a trip to Six Flags, you might want to check if they are open first before you spend four hours driving there and four hours driving back," she told the newspaper.
