Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Singer Chris Connor was born this day in 1927 in Kansas City. Her professional career began with the Claude Thornhill band, but it was with the Stan Kenton Orchestra that her husky voice and emotional intensity began winning her a loyal army of fans.

Guitarist Russell Malone was born this day in 1963 in Albany, Ga. He's now touring with his own band after several years on the road as a high-profile featured sideman with Diana Krall.


On this night in 2001, Jazz at Lincoln Center began a three-concert celebration of the high-flying, hot cooking music of hard bop trumpeters Lee Morgan and Freddie Hubbard, featuring young trumpeters Dominick Farinacci, Andrea Lindborg, Jeremy Pelt and Mike Rodriguez.

Week one of the Blue Note's Fall Vocal Festival continues tonight with The Manhattan Transfer's 30th birthday celebration. He will premiere a new work, "The Rimsky Korsakov Project -- Jazz Interpretations of Sheherazade" and also perform his piece "The Coltrane Project." The fall edition of the Cape May Jazz Festival opens at New Jersey's quaint southernmost point tonight. This festival is a Dizzy Gillespie tribute. The opening night headliners include Herbie Mann, T.S. Monk, Arturo O'Farrill and Jimmy Bruno.

Saturday's prime acts include the Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Alumni Band, featuring Slide Hampton, Paquito D'Rivera, Claudio Roditi, Benny Green, Silvester Lee and John Lee; Buster Williams' "Something More" band featuring Kenny Barron, Benny Golson and Lenny White; the Phil Woods quintet; Bootsie Barnes; Junior Mance; and, William Cepeda's Afro-Rican jazz band.

On the Boston area jazz scene... the Pat Martino-Gil Goldstein duo is at The Regattabar in Cambridge through Saturday. Freddy Cole is at Scullers jazz club in Boston tonight and Saturday. Trumpeter Jeff Stout's trio is at Ryles in Cambridge tonight with singer Debby Larkin and guitarist Gray Sargent. The Jim Hobbs Big Band is at the Church of Our Saviour in Brookline tonight as part of the Jazz in the Sanctuary series.


Roy Ayers is at Zanzibar Blue in Philadelphia tonight and Saturday.


Saxophonist Eric Alexander is at Twins in Washington, D.C., tonight and Saturday with his quartet, featuring pianist Harold Mabern.


The Hollywood, Fla., Jazz Festival presents conch/trombonist Steve Turre's band and Sammy Figueroa's Latin Synergy band featuring Dave Valentin and Ray Vega tonight at the Hollywood Central Performing Arts Center.


The second annual Collegiate Big Band Invitational gets underway tonight at the Bird of Paradise in Ann Arbor, Mich. It runs through Sunday with bands from Bowling Green, Central Michigan University, the University of Michigan, Michigan State, Wayne State and Eastern Michigan.
