Subscribe | UPI Odd Newsletter Subscribe CRIME WRITER REVEALS 'REAL' RIPPER Best-selling mystery writer Patricia Cornwell says she thinks she knows the identity of Jack the Ripper, the Victorian-era serial killer who terrorized London and maimed and killed at least seven prostitutes. Advertisement The author of the popular Kay Scarpetta series unveils her theory in her new non-fiction book, "Portrait of a Killer: Jack the Ripper -- Case Closed." According to Cornwell, the killer is not Prince Albert and Queen Victoria's drug-addled physician, Sir William Gull, nor any one of a dozen suspects proposed during the last century. She says the fiend was none other than famous Victorian artist, Walter Sickert. In arguing her case against Sickert, Cornwell cites the gory subjects of the British impressionist's paintings and the fact he hired prostitutes to model for him, but says the most damning evidence is the "cautious indicator" that DNA samples left on letters allegedly sent by Jack the Ripper and on missives supposedly sent by Sickert "may have come from the same person." Advertisement BRODERICKS WELCOME BABY BOY Popular New York acting couple Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick welcomed their first child into the world early Monday morning. It's a boy, Parker's publicist confirmed, noting the baby was 6 pounds, 8 ounces and measured 19 1/2 inches at birth. The family is doing well. The publicist did, however, contradict a New York Post report claiming the child is named David Perkins Broderick. The Post reported a placard placed outside the couple's Lenox Hill Hospital room announced the moniker. The publicist insisted the couple still have not settled on a name for their bundle of joy. This is the first child for the 37-year-old actress and her 40-year-old husband. The couple celebrated their fifth wedding anniversary in May. RYDER: I STOLE TO PREPARE FOR ROLE A witness at Winona Ryder's shop-lifting trial says the actress claimed she stole nearly $6,000 in merchandise from a Beverly Hills boutique to prepare for a film role. Ken Evans, a security official for Saks Fifth Avenue, testified Monday that when she was caught stealing thousands of dollars in hats, hair accessories and handbags, Ryder said: "I'm sorry for what I did. My director directed me to shoplift for a role which I was preparing." Advertisement Ryder faces up to three years in prison if convicted of three felony counts of grand theft, second-degree burglary and vandalism. DISNEY SONG IS RZEZNIK'S SOLO DEBUT Singer/songwriter John Rzeznik, lead vocalist for the Goo Goo Dolls, is making his solo debut with the song, "I'm Still Here," from the upcoming animated Disney film, "Treasure Planet," an intergalactic version of the Robert Louis Stevenson classic, "Treasure Island." Disney describes the song as one that "adds power and emotion to a dramatic montage that reveals insights into the lead character of Jim Hawkins as he searches for his place in the universe." The speaking voice of Jim is provided by actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt, of "3rd Rock from the Sun" fame. "Treasure Planet," which stars the vocal talents of Martin Short, David Hyde Pierce and Emma Thompson, will be in theaters Nov. 27.
