Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Today is Aug. 9.

Drummer Jack DeJohnette was born this day in 1942 in Chicago. He began playing piano when he was 4 and didn't take up the drums until age 18. DeJohnette was on the recording sessions that resulted in Miles Davis's landmark fusion album "Bitches Brew" in 1969. These days, he is most prominent as a member of pianist Keith Jarrett's Standards Trio.

On this day in 1974, trumpeter Bill Chase and three members of his jazz-rock group Chase were killed when their plane crashed near Jackson, Minn., while on tour.

On this day in 1938, the Benny Goodman band played its first Eddie Sauter arrangement during an appearance on the "CBS Camel Caravan" radio show. The tune was "Bolero."

On the New York jazz scene... Dianne Reeves is at the Village Vanguard through Sunday with pianist Peter Martin, bassist Ruben Rogers, and drummer Greg Hutchinson. Bassist Charlie Haden is at the Blue Note for a two-week duo celebration, with Geri Allen tonight through Sunday, then Paul Bley, Gonzalo Rubalcaba and Brad Mehldau. The Steve Lacy-Roswell Rudd quartet is at Iridium this week.

Singer Luciana Souza is at the Jazz Standard with her quintet. Buster Williams' quartet with Patrice Rushen, Lenny White and Stefon Harris is at Birdland through Saturday. Lenora Zenzalai Helm is at the Jazz Gallery tonight. Jamaican guitarist Ernest Ranglin is at Joe's Pub. The Parsons-Lewins quartet is at the Cornelia Street Café. Mike Fahn is at Kavehaz tonight.

The world's most famous jazz event, the Newport Jazz Festival, opens with the 2002 edition of its successor event tonight. The opening night performance at this year's JVC Jazz Festival is Tony Bennett. In addition to performing tonight at the original festival site at Newport Casino, Bennett is back tomorrow afternoon at Fort Adams State Park where the weekend lineup also includes the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Dave Holland quintet, Isaac Hayes, Arturo Sandoval, Nicholas Payton with special guest James Carter, Sex Mob, Herbie Hancock, Michael Brecker and Roy Hargrove, Greg Osby and Jason Moran, Yerba Buena, Oleta Adams, Lea DeLaria, David S. In the Boston area, Jimmy Scott is at Scullers tonight and Saturday. Saxophonist Matt Darriau's Ballin' the Jack is at the Regattabar in Cambridge tonight. Saxophonist Herman Johnson is at Ryles jazz club in Cambridge tonight. The latest edition of the Glenn Miller Orchestra is at the Jazz at Sunset series at the EcoTarium in Worcester this evening.

The Philadelphia Museum of Art presents Havana-born pianist, composer and bandleader Gonzalo Rubalcaba tonight.

Singer Harvey Thompson is at the Bird of Paradise in Ann Arbor, Mich., tonight and Saturday.

Kermit Ruffins and the Barbecue Swingers are at Mid-City Lanes Rock'n'Bowl. Rhodes Spedale and Dave Carbonara are at the Noble Bistro. The Ernie Elly Slickshots with Thais Clark are at Palm Court. Leroy Jones leads tonight's band at Preservation Hall. The Panorama Jazz Band is at the Seaport Cafe. Ellis Marsalis is at Snug Harbor. The New Orleans Jazz Vipers are at the Spotted Cat.

Colorado's Jazz in the Sangres festival in Westcliffe opens tonight with the Neil Bridge Seven Plus Band. Saturday's performers include the Jazz in the Sangres All-Star Youth Band, Billy Tolles Band, Conjunto Colores and Sherry Williams. The Sunday acts are Heavenly Echoes, the Mike Longo trio, Manuel Molina quintet, Rich Chiaraluce quartet and Bobby Hutcherson.

The original Yellowjackets quartet reconvenes tonight for the first time in 20 years. The original band members consist of Russell Ferrante (acoustic piano and synthesizer), Robben Ford (guitar), Jimmy Haslip (electric bass), and Ricky Lawson (drums). The concert will take place under the stars at the historic Ford Amphitheater in the Hollywood Hills, under the auspices of the Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles. The opening act, Blue Skies, features the debut of an exciting new collaboration among pianist Russell Ferrante, guitarist Robben Ford, and his wife, vocalist Anne Kerry Ford.

Elsewhere on the California jazz scene... the Jeff Hamilton trio is at Steamers Jazz Cafe in Fullerton tonight. Pianist Dave Burrell and bassist William Parker are at the Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles tonight. The Stanford Jazz Festival in Palo Alto features Rufus Reid and the Stanford Jazz Workshop All-Stars tonight. In San Francisco, trumpeter Dave Scott's quintet is at Jazz at Pearl's tonight.

The AT&T San Jose Jazz Festival opens its main stage with the fusion Latin groups Quetzal and Los Hombres Calientes. Susie Hansen's Latin Jazz Band performs this noon at the Museum of Cultural Diversity in Carson.

Herve Sellin and McCoy Tyner are tonight's headliners at the 25th anniversary edition of Jazz en Marciac, France.
