Today is Sunday, July 7.

Weather Report co-founder Joe Zawinul was born this day in 1932 in Vienna, Austria. The pianist and synthesizer whiz became hooked on jazz right after World War II through a most unusual introduction. When the film "Stormy Weather" arrived in Austria, he saw it 24 times.

Zawinul's key collaborations after moving to the United States in 1959 were with trumpeters Maynard Ferguson and Miles Davis and saxophonist Cannonball Adderley, for whom he composed the Grammy-winning hit "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy."

Trumpeter, former television bandleader and zany fashion plate Carl Severinsen, better known as "Doc" Severinsen, was born this day in 1927 in Arlington, Ore.

Tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley was born this day in 1930 in Eastman, Ga. He died in 1986.

On this day in 1950, trumpeter Fats Navarro, a leading bebop era horn soloist, died in New York at age 26 of tuberculosis.

This was also the day, in 1937, when Count Basie first recorded his classic tune "One O'Clock Jump."

On this day in 2001, the Montreal International Jazz Festival concluded its 22nd edition with trumpeter Wallace Roney's Miles Davis tribute featuring five of Davis's former sidemen, trumpeter Enrico Rava's "Electric Five" project, the Guy Nadon big band, singer Dorothee Berryman, and the New Art Jazz Quartet featuring James Blood Ulmer, Reggie Workman, John Hicks and Rashied Ali. Trumpeter Roy Hargrove concluded his half of the festival's acclaimed "Invitation" series with a concert teaming him with Montreal's I Musici chamber orchestra.

On the recording front...

Alto saxophonist Tim Berne is out with three new recordings -- all at the same time, which, like many things Berne does, runs counter to the recording industry establishment. The discs are "Open, Coma" with the Copenhagen Art Ensemble, "Science Fiction" featuring Craig Taborn, Tom Rainey and Marc Ducret, and "The Sevens" featuring Berne with the Artte Quartet, David Torn and Marc Ducret. He calls the latter project a recording of "unity through contrast."
