Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Big band and bebop trumpeter Freddie Webster was born this day in 1916 in Cleveland. He was a big influence on younger players who heard him, including Kenny Dorham and Miles Davis.

As Davis once put it, "I used to love what he did to a note. He didn't play a lot of notes. He didn't waste any." Freddie Webster died of a heart attack in 1947 at age 31.


West Coast trombonist Bill Watrous, considered a technically brilliant player on his instrument, was born this day in 1939 in Middletown, Conn.


On this day in 1939, Sidney Bechet recorded his classic version of "Summertime" for the Blue Note label.


Blues shouter Jimmy Rushing died in New York on this day in 1972. He was 69.

In California... Kuumbwa Jazz Center in Santa Cruz holds it's annual fundraising event at Monterey Bay Aquarium. This evening features the Bobby Hutcherson Quartet, featuring world famous vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson and his group featuring pianist Matthew Clark, bassist Jeff Chambers and drummer Eddie Marshall. Also performing are Brazilian duo Claudia Villela and Ricardo Peixoto, the Modern Gypsies, the Ron Kaplan trio, Weber Iago, accordionist Morgani, the Margo LeDuc trio and D'bop.
