HOLLYWOOD, April 28 (UPI) -- The second weekend of "The Scorpion King" easily topped a moderate weekend at the nation's box office with an estimated $17.6 million at 3,449 theaters during the Friday-Sunday period, studio sources said Sunday.

Universal's "King," starring pro wrestler The Rock, performed in line with expectations as it fell 51 percent from its opening with a still-impressive $5,095 per theater. The spinoff from last year's hit "The Mummy Returns" has now taken in $60.8 million in its first 10 days.

"The Scorpion King" will see its two-week reign end next weekend when Sony opens its much-anticipated "Spider-Man" action-adventure, starring Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst, as the summer moviegoing season moves into high gear. Also opening will be DreamWorks' Woody Allen comedy "Hollywood Ending" and MGM's gang drama "Deuces Wild."

Finishing a distant but respectable second was Paramount's third weekend of "Changing Lanes" with $9 million at 2,642 sites as the drama declined only 19 percent from its second weekend. "Lanes" has nearly hit $45 million in 17 days.

Holdovers dominated the business in the face of a pair of disappointing openings -- 20th Century Fox's "Life or Something Like It," a romantic comedy starring Angelina Jolie, in third with $6.7 million at 2,604 theaters and New Line's horror sequel "Jason X" in fourth with $6.5 million at 1,878 locations.

"Life," which cost a reported $40 million, focuses on Jolie's TV reporter character who is told by a clairvoyant that she will die in a few days while "Jason X" is a slasher film set in outer space. Both debuted amid mixed reviews.

Warner Bros.' second weekend of "Murder By Numbers" finished fifth with $6.3 million at 2,663 sites as it declined 32 percent from its opening for a 10-day total of $18.3 million. Disney's fifth weekend of "The Rookie" continued to draw respectably in sixth with $5.4 million at 2,543 locations, dropping only 17 percent from its fourth weekend to lift its 31-day total to nearly $61 million.

Fox's seventh weekend of animated comedy "Ice Age" remained impressive in seventh with $4.6 million at 2,594 theaters. "Age" dropped only 22 percent from its sixth weekend and has now taken in $165.4 overall, placing it 73rd on the all-time domestic grosser list ahead of "Hannibal."

Sony's fifth weekend of "Panic Room" finished a close eighth with $4.2 million at 2,463 locations. "Room," which had topped the chart in its first two sessions, has gone past $87 million.

Rounding out the top 10 were a pair of holdovers -- Fox's fourth weekend of "High Crimes" with $3 million at 2,060 sites and Sony's third weekend of romantic comedy "The Sweetest Thing," which continued to disappoint with $2.9 million at 2,124 screens. "Thing" fell 43 percent from its second weekend and has taken in only $21.3 million in 17 days.

Warner's limited opening of offbeat drama "The Salton Sea," starring Val Kilmer, performed well with $175,000 at 15 theaters.

With the top two films taking in a combined total $26.6 million, the weekend cumulative for the top 10 was a fairly mild $66 million. That was about $15 million ahead of the same weekend last year when "Driven" led with $12.2 million but about $23 million behind last weekend when "The Scorpion King" opened with $36.1 million.
