Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

German pianist Jutta Hipp was born this date in 1925 in Leipzig, Germany. She formed her own small jazz group in Munich after World War II, then toured Europe with a bop quintet. She moved to the United States in the mid-1950s and formed a trio with Peter Ind and Ed Thigpen.

Trumpeter Tony Fruscella was born this date in 1927 in New York. He was most active in the 1950s, playing in the bands of Lester Young, Gerry Mulligan and Stan Getz.

On the New York jazz scene, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra is at the Village Vanguard tonight. The Toshiko Akiyoshi Jazz Orchestra featuring Lew Tabackin is at Birdland, where there's also an early evening show by the Scott Whitfield Jazz Orchestra. Les Paul is at Iridium. Steve Coleman's Reflex band and Fieldwork featuring Vijay Iyer, Aaron Stewart and Elliot Humberto Kavee are at the Knitting Factory.

The Ken Schaphorst Big Band is at the New England Conservatory's Jordan Hall for a free concert tonight, featuring an all-star lineup with John Medeski, John Carlson, Donny McCaslin, Doug Yates and Alan Chase. Medeski leads a free master class at the school this afternoon on "The Conversation in Music (The Art of Listening)."


Organ veteran Reuben Wilson, drummer Bernard "Pretty" Purdie" and guitarist Grant Green Jr., bring their Masters of Groove band into the Iron Horse Music Hall in Northampton, Mass., tonight.


On the New Orleans jazz scene, Bob French leads the Monday night jam at Donna's. Joe Krown is at Frenchy's Gallery this afternoon and tonight at Le Bon Temps Roule. Jason Marsalis's quartet is at the Funky Butt. Trumpeter Reginald Koeller leads the band at Preservation Hall. Singer Charmaine Neville is at Snug Harbor.


The Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra is at the Bass Performance hall in Fort Worth, Texas, tonight.


Pianist Lynne Arriale's trio opens a three-night run at The Dakota in St. Paul, Minn., tonight.


In California tonight, Nicholas Payton's band is at the Kuumbwa Jazz Center in Santa Cruz. The Mike Melvoin trio with Brian Bromberg and John Guerin is at the Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles tonight. The John Peace Superband is at Steamer's Jazz Café in Fullerton. The Banda Brothers Sextet is at Spazio in Sherman Oaks. Drummer Peter Erskine is special guest tonight with the California State University at Hayward jazz bands at Yoshi's in Oakland.

On the jazz research and publishing front...

-- The Hal Leonard Corp. is just out with "The Vince Guaraldi Collection," which contains nine piano transcriptions. They include material from Guaraldi's best-selling Fantasy CDs "Jazz Impressions of Black Orpheus" ("Outra Vez," "Manha de Carnaval," "Cast Your Fate to the Wind") and "A Charlie Brown Christmas" ("Linus and Lucy," "Christmas Time Is Here," "O Tannenbaum").

-- Tom Lord has completed the final volume of his jazz reference work "The Jazz Discography." The 14-year project cataloged more than 100 years of recorded jazz from 1896 to through the present. The complete work occupies 26 volumes that each exceed 600 pages. It includes data on 136,263 recording sessions, covers 24,351 bandleaders and lists more than 1.5 million musician and tune entries. The complete work will soon be made available in Version 3.3 of its CD-ROM format. The work is available exclusively from the publisher, Lord Music Reference Inc. through its web site at lordisco.com.
