Trumpeter Oran "Hot Lips" Page was born this day in 1908 in Dallas. He accompanied singer Ma Rainey early in his career, then joined Walter Page's Blue Devils and Bennie Moten's band in Kansas City, working briefly with Count Basie as a principal soloist in 1936.

Vibes player Bobby Hutcherson was born this day in 1941 in Los Angeles.


Saxophonist Bob Mintzer, a member of the Yellowjackets band and leader of his own New York big band, was born this day in 1953 in New Rochelle, N.Y.


On this day in 1962, Benny Goodman's band flew to the Soviet Union for a tour in 1962, becoming the American first jazz band to play in Russia.

On the New York jazz scene, guitarist Peter Leitch and alto saxophonist Gary Bartz are at Walker's tonight. The Chico O'Farrill Afro-Cuban Jazz Big Band is at Birdland. This is the final night for Don Byron's Music for Six Musicians project at the Village Vanguard. Jon Hendricks and Annie Ross with New York Voices at the Blue Note and the Pat Martino trio with Joey DeFrancesco and Byron Landham at Iridium. Trombonist Chris Washburne and his SYOTOS Latin jazz band is at Smoke tonight.

Trumpeter Tony Lujan's Bop Latino Septet is at Trumpets in Montclair, N.J., tonight. The Boston-based international band features Leo Blanco on piano, bassist Fernando Huergo, percussionist Ernesto Diaz, drummer Bertram Lehman, saxophonist Felipe Salles and trombonist Joel Yennior.


Saxophonist Kirk Feather's quartet is at the Custom House Tavern in Providence, R.I., tonight.


On the Boston area jazz scene, bassist Michael Moore and guitarist Gene Bertoncini team up tonight at Scullers. Masashi Harada is at the New England Conservatory's Williams Hall this afternoon. Marc Rossi is at the Center for the Arts in Natick, Mass.


Guitarist Gray Sargent and his band are at the Press Room in Portsmouth, N.H., tonight.


Singer Barbara Ware and the Matt Michaels trio perform this afternoon at the Fairmount Presbyterian Church in Cleveland.


On the Chicago jazz scene, Corky Siegel's Chamber Blues band is at the Jazz Showcase tonight. Sonny Turner is at Joe's BeBop Café and Jazz Emporium on the Navy Pier. The Russell Rowe trio is at Pops for Champagne.


In New Orleans tonight, singer Topsy Chapman teams up tonight with David Torkanowsky and Friends at the Crescent City Brewhouse. Johnny Vidacovich brings his trio and his funky drumming into the Funky Butt. Harold 'Duke' Dejean's Olympia Brass Band is at Preservation Hall. 3 Now 4 is at Snug Harbor. Singer Wanda Rouzan is at the Storyville District Jazz Parlor. Adonis Rose, Peter Martin, Roland Guerin, Brice Winston lead the jam session tonight at Sweet Lorraine.

On the California jazz scene, pianist McCoy Tyner closes out the first week of his annual two-week residency at Yoshi's in Oakland tonight. He's been performing all week with saxophonist Kenny Garrett, bassist George Mraz and drummer Al Foster. Beginning Tuesday, he's joined by bassist Ron Carter and drummer Harvey Mason. Trombonist Curtis Fuller's quartet is at The Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles tonight. Saxophonist James Moody's quintet is at the Catalina Bar and Grill in North Hollywood. Violinist Susie Hansen's Latin Jazz Band performs this afternoon at Fisherman's Village in Marina del Rey.


Singer Nancy Wilson closes out her weeklong run at Dimitriou's Jazz Alley in Seattle tonight.
