Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Tenor saxophonist Billy Mitchell was born this day in 1926 in Kansas City, Mo. He succeeded Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis in one of the tenor chairs in the Count Basie Orchestra in 1957 before becoming a busy free-lance musician and leader in his own right.

Stride pianist Joe Turner was born this day in 1907 in Baltimore. He moved to New York around 1925 and worked with Benny Carter and Louis Armstrong before becoming accompanist to singer Adelaide Hall, with whom he toured Europe.


On this day in 1941, Glenn Miller's band recorded "String of Pearls" for the Bluebird label. It featured a dazzling solo by cornet player Bobby Hackett.

On the New York jazz scene, guitarist John Scofield's quartet is at Iridium and trumpeter Chuck Mangione is at Blue Note for two more nights. Pianist Cyrus Chestnut's trio is at the Village Vanguard. Bassist John Patitucci's quartet featuring pianist Luis Perdomo, saxophonist Tim Ries and drummer Brian Blade is at Birdland tonight.

Savion Glover debuts his new dance troupe Ti Dii tonight at the Beacon Theater in a fund-raising concert for Sept. 11th relief efforts that will also feature Abbey Lincoln and Wayne Shorter.

The Harbor Conservatory for the Performing Arts holds its 12th annual Charlie Palmieri Memorial Piano Scholarship Competition this afternoon. Tito Puente established the fund in 1980 to raise funds for students to continue and/or begin their musical studies, as well as to reaffirm pride in Hispanic culture.


In and around Boston, singer-pianist Patricia Barber's trio is at the Regattabar in Cambridge tonight. Walter Beasley is at Scullers jazz club. Trumpeter Frankie V. leads his band at Ryles jazz club in Cambridge. The John Lamkin quintet is at Wally's Jazz Paradise Café. Singer Michelle Willson and her Evil Gal Orchestra are at the Sea Note in Nantasket tonight.


The University of Pittsburgh presents its 31st Annual Jazz Concert Nov. 3 with a star-studded lineup of musicians. Performers include trumpeters Jon Faddis and Cecil Bridgewater, saxophonists Charles McPherson, James Moody, Nathan Davis and Joe Lovano, guitarist Mark Whitfield, cellist David Baker, pianist Kirk Lightsey, bassist Abraham Laboriel and drummer Terri Lyne Carrington.

Trumpeter Arturo Sandoval appears at Chrysler Hall in Norfolk tonight in the Virginia Symphony's Pop Series.


The Jazz Mandolin Project is at the New Daisy Theater in Memphis tonight.


On the New Orleans jazz scene, singer Christina Machado is at Cobalt tonight. Kurt Elling is at the Contemporary Arts Center with his band. The Soul Rebels Brass Band is at the Dragon's Den. Trumpeter Jeremy Davenport's band is at the Ritz Carlton's French Quarter Bar. Ingrid Lucia and the Flying Neutrinos are at the Old Point tonight. Germaine Bazzle and the Ed Peterson group team up night at Snug Harbor. Carl LeBlanc and Marc Braud are in the spotlight at the Storyville District Jazz Parlor tonight. Tommy Yetta's New Orleans Jazz Band is at the French Market Complex this afternoon.


Today's 5th Annual Brownsville, Texas, Latin Jazz Festival schedule includes a Latin Jazz Street Party and a Capitol Theater showing of Fernando Trueba’s Latin jazz documentary "Calle 54."


The 19th annual San Francisco Jazz Festival features a "Bright Moments" celebration of the life and musical legacy of saxophonist Rahsaan Roland Kirk tonight at the Herbst Theatre featuring James Carter, Steve Turre, Mulgrew Miller, Vincent Herring, Buster Williams and Lewis Nash. Pianist Dave Brubeck's quartet is at Masonic Auditorium. Joanne Brackeen is in the solo piano spotlight at the Florence Gould Theatre, and there's a salsa dance party at Bimbo's 365 Club.

Elsewhere on the California jazz scene, bassist Stanley Clarke's band is at Yoshi's in Oakland tonight and Sunday. Toshiko Akiyoshi and Lew Tabackin are at the Catalina Bar and Grill in North Hollywood.

The Estrada Brothers Latin jazz band is at Steamer's Jazz Café in Fullerton tonight. Sharon McKnight is at the Plush Room and Don Alberts' duo is at the Cypress Club in San Francisco.


The Jovino Santos Neto Trio with Chuck Deardorf and John Bishop will perform tonight as part of the Recording Academy's annual member celebration, silent auction and showcase at The Experience Music Project in Seattle. It will benefit the academy's community-based education programs.


Cuban composer and pianist Omar Sosa's septet performs tonight at the Lausanne Jazz Festival in Switzerland.
