Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Drummer Tubby Hall was born in Sellers, La., this day in 1895. He played with a number of early jazz bands in New Orleans before moving to Chicago in 1920 to join a band led by the legendary cornet player King Oliver. Hall recorded several times in the 1920s and 1930s as a sideman with Louis Armstrong. He died in Chicago in 1946.

Trombonist Jimmy Archey was born this day in 1902 in Norfolk, Va. He made his first notable recordings in the James P. Johnson Orchestra with Fats Waller and King Oliver, and played in a succession of the finest big bands. He died in 1967.


On this day in 1939, Mary Lou Williams recorded her solo piano solo version of "Little Joe from Chicago" for the Columbia label.

On the New York jazz scene, guitarist Liberty Ellman's quartet is at The Jazz Gallery tonight. Cornetist Ed Polcer is featured today in the Jazz at Noon series at Café St. Bart's. Singer Kevin Mahogany is at Birdland tonight and Saturday. Saxophonist Billy Harper's quintet is at the Up Over Jazz Café in Brooklyn tonight and Saturday. Russ Freeman and the Rippingtons, Kirk Whalum and Marc Antoine are at the Beacon Theatre tonight.

The first concert in the Jazz Composer Portrait Series at Columbia University's Miller Theater is set for tonight. It will feature the music of pianist and composer Elmo Hope, who died in 1967 at age 43. Pianist Eric Reed will be joined by Joe Lovano, Kenny Washington and Hope's widow, pianist Bertha Hope.


Pianist Norman Simmons' quartet is at Trumpets Jazz restaurant in Montclair, N.J., tonight and Saturday.


Singer Karrin Allyson is at Zanzibar Blue in Philadelphia tonight and Saturday.


Pianist Jean-Michel Pilc's trio is at Twins in Washington, D.C., tonight and Saturday.


On the Chicago jazz scene, pianist Danilo Perez is at Joe Segal's Jazz Showcase for three more nights. The Mike Jones trio is at the Green Mill tonight and Saturday Skinny Williams is at Joe's BeBop Café and Jazz Emporium tonight.

In New Orleans tonight, Charmaine Neville and Amasa Miller are at Cobalt, the Steve Walker All-Stars are at Donna's, All That Funk is at the Dragon's Den, the Egg Yolk Jubilee Brass band is at El Matador and trumpeter Jeremy Davenport is at the French Quarter Bar. James Rivers is at the Fine Arts Center and Hammond B-3 master Jimmy Smith's quartet is at the House of Blues.

Singer Tricia "Sista Teedy" Boutte teams up with pianist Paul Longstreth at Le Meridien Hotel, pianist Ellis Marsalis is at Snug Harbor. Humphrey Davis and John Boutte share the spotlight at the Storyville District Jazz Parlor.


On the California jazz scene, drummer Jeff Hamilton's trip is at Steamers Jazz Café in Fullerton tonight and Saturday. Violinist Susie Hansen's Latin Jazz Band is at the Jazz Depot Festival in Claremont tonight. Acoustic Alchemy is at the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano tonight.

Herbie Hancock, Michael Brecker and Roy Hargrove bring their Miles Davis-John Coltrane tribute tour to the East County Performing Arts Center in El Cajon tonight. Marian McPartland is at Yoshi's in Oakland for three more nights. Chris Botti is at Kimball's East in Emeryville. The Larry Vuckovich trio is at Spiedo Ristorante in San Jose.

In San Francisco tonight, the Frank Jackson duo is at the Cypress Club, Marco Periera performs tonight with saxophonist Harvey Wainapel at the Main Post Chapel at The Presidio. Meteorite is at the Black Cat and Blue Bar, and the Paul Vorn Hagen quintet is at Pearl's.


Saxophonist Bob Mintzer is featured with student and faculty bands tonight at the Capilano College Performing Arts Theatre in North Vancouver, B.C., Canada.
