NEW YORK, Oct. 8 (UPI) -- AMC debuted new footage from the eagerly awaited, seventh season of The Walking Dead at a New York Comic Con fan event Saturday night.

Thousands of the show's diehard followers flooded into Madison Square Garden to hear the stars and producers tease the upcoming season premiere in which a beloved character will be slain by Jeffrey Dean Morgan's villain Negan.

The panel discussion was moderated by Talking Dead host Chris Hardwick. At the end of the session, a 3 1/2-minute clip from Season 7, Episode 1 was screened for the audience.

The footage showed Andrew Lincoln's shocked and broken Rick Grimes on his knees, vowing to kill Negan, who stands above him grinning and holding a barbed wire-covered, baseball bat dripping with the blood of one of Rick's friends.

"Simon's my right-hand man. Having one of those is important. I mean, what do you have left without him? A whole lot of work. You have one? Maybe one of these fine people still breathing? Oh, or did I..." Negan taunts Rick, indicating his bloody bat.

Negan then grabs an axe and drags Rick to a trailer as people can be heard crying in the background. The final shot pans back to where the two foes had been at the beginning of the clip. The ground is covered with blood and gore, but doesn't show who the victim is.

"Rick threatens Negan. Don't miss the Season 7 Premiere of The Walking Dead, Sunday, October 23 at 9/8c," reads a message that accompanied the sneak peek, which was later posted on YouTube. A 2-hour re-cap of the previous six seasons is to air Oct. 16 on AMC.
