LOS ANGELES, April 18 (UPI) -- ABC fantasy series Once Upon a Time introduced its first lesbian romance Sunday.

Fans of the fairy tale drama expected sparks to fly between Mulan (Jamie Chung) and Aurora (Sarah Bolger), but it was Ruby (Meghan Ory) and Dorothy (Teri Reeves) who took the plunge.

The episode, "Ruby Slippers," ends with Ruby breaking Zelena's (Rebecca Mader) sleeping spell on Dorothy by awakening her with true love's kiss. Mulan doesn't take center stage but is on hand to encourage Ruby's feelings for her friend.

"True love's kiss has been a staple of this show since the beginning," series creators Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis said in a statement. "This past Sunday's episode was just another example of how in a fairy tale, as in life, love is love."

Horowitz and Kitsis had promised to include an LGBT storyline in Season 5 at the season premiere in September, saying they "would love to be able to tell a love story" that reflects the LGBT community's support of the show.

"We want the show to reflect the world as it is now," Horowitz explained. "It's something we think is due and important to do on the show. This is the world we live in."
