Katy Perry kicks off the American Music Awards ceremony

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 24 (UPI) -- Katy Perry kicked off the American Music Awards in Los Angeles Sunday night with a spectacular, Geisha-themed performance of her song "Unconditionally."

Recording artist Pitbull served as emcee of the event, which honored the best in all genres of music for 2013.

The prize presentation was broadcast live on ABC from the NOKIA Theatre L.A. LIVE.

Scheduled to perform throughout the night were Luke Bryan, Miley Cyrus, Florida Georgia Line, Lady Gaga, Ke$ha, Imagine Dragons, Kendrick Lamar, Jennifer Lopez, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, One Direction, Justin Timberlake and TLC.

Pop star Rihanna was to be presented with the inaugural AMA Icon honor.
