NEW YORK, Sept. 11 (UPI) -- AMC and Sony Pictures Television say they are working on "Better Call Saul," a prequel series to the iconic New Mexico-set drama "Breaking Bad."

"As conceived, the new series is based on the show's popular Saul Goodman character with the working title 'Better Call Saul,'" the two parties said in a joint statement Wednesday. "Plans call for Saul to be a one-hour prequel that will focus on the evolution of the popular Saul Goodman character before he ever became Walter White's lawyer."

Bob Odenkirk plays Saul to Bryan Cranston's Walter on "Breaking Bad," which is wrapping up its fifth and final season.

AMC did not say when it expects to air the prequel series.
