IBM's Watson to appear on 'Jeopardy'

NEW YORK, Feb. 12 (UPI) -- A computerized contestant will appear on the U.S. television game show 'Jeopardy' next week in a unique match against two human contestants, IBM said.

The company's Watson will match its mechanical wits in episodes taped at an IBM Research facility in New York.

Watson won a practice round against two past "Jeopardy" champions a month ago. Contestant Brad Rutten told the Los Angeles Times Watson's unflinching focus was definitely an advantage for the machine. "There's something about when it gives a shockingly incorrect answer with the same chirpy HAL 9000 voice that feels so hopeful," he said. "Watson won't get discouraged, it will just try again."

"Jeopardy" is normally taped at a studio in Culver City.
