May 30 (UPI) -- Ed Sheeran says he's "not engaged" to girlfriend Cherry Seaborn.

The 26-year-old British singer denied this week that he proposed to Seaborn after actor Russell Crowe referred to Seaborn as Sheeran's "fiancée" during an interview with the Australian radio show Fitzy and Wippa.

"He e-mailed me to say sorry," Sheeran told a reporter in Brazil, according to a clip that aired Monday on Fitzy and Wippa.

"He's only met Cherry once and I didn't introduce her. I didn't say anything, so I think he just assumed," he explained. "But no, we're not engaged."

Crowe made the slip this month on Fitzy and Wippa while discussing how Sheeran has stayed at his home in New South Wales.

"He was on tour here and he was getting a bit burned out so he came up and stayed at the farm for a couple days to get some sleep and then we became conversational mates," the 53-year-old New Zealand actor said.

"We just became friendly and he has since come back with his fiancée for more time and stuff," he added.

Sheeran told Us Weekly in March that he first met Seaborn at their high school in Suffolk, England, and reconnected with her in New York through a mutual friend. He also confirmed his song "Perfect" is inspired by Seaborn.
