June 8 (UPI) -- Julia Garner is reportedly the top choice to play Madonna in a new biopic.

The Hollywood Reporter said Tuesday that Garner, 28, is the frontrunner to portray the Grammy-winning singer and actress in a new film from Universal Pictures.

The news follows a months-long process that included choreography sessions with Madonna's choreographer, and choreography, singing and reading sessions with Madonna herself. Florence Pugh, Odessa Young, Alexa Demie and other actresses were considered for the role.

Garner has been the top choice since the beginning of the year, according to Deadline.

Sources told Variety that Garner has been offered the role. The actress' team is now considering the offer and is expected to accept.

The new film will explore Madonna's early career. The movie is based on a script by Diablo Cody, with Madonna to serve as director and Amy Pascal as producer.

Madonna said on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon in October that she took over the project after seeing a "hideous" script by someone else.
