Aaron Pierre, Kelvin Harrison Jr. join 'Lion King' prequel from Barry Jenkins

Aug. 27 (UPI) -- Aaron Pierre and Kelvin Harrison Jr. have been cast in Disney's upcoming Lion King prequel from director Barry Jenkins.

The film, a photo-realistic prequel to Disney's Lion King remake from 2019, will explore the early years of Mufasa and his brother Scar.

Pierre will voice young Mufasa, taking over the role from James Earl Jones in the 2019 film. Harrison will voice Scar, who was originally named Taka. Harrison is taking over the role from Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Production is underway. Additional casting will be announced at a later date.

Jenkins is best known for helming Best Picture winner Moonlight and If Beal Street Could Talk. Jeff Nathanson is returning to pen the script.

The Lion King remake from 2019 grossed $1.6 billion globally.
