LOS ANGELES, Dec. 27 (UPI) -- Stephen King's It released a creepy new photo Monday featuring Pennywise the Clown. The image, which debuted on Entertainment Weekly, shows the demonic entity skulking in the sewers beneath the fictional town of Derry, Maine.

Swedish actor Bill Skarsgard, 26, plays Pennywise in the forthcoming Andres Muschietti adaptation. Muschietti told EW the character will "unsettle" audiences because he doesn't remain in the shadows for long.
"Pennywise shows up, he's front and center, and he does his show. He has an act," the director revealed. "So it's weird all the time, and every little thing implies a further threat."
It is based on King's novel of the same name, and was previously adapted as a two-part TV movie starring Tim Curry as Pennywise. The story follows a group of children terrorized by a shape-shifting creature that most often appears in the form of a clown.
"There's a childishness to the character, because he's so closely linked to the kids," Skarsgard told EW in July. "The clown is the manifestation of children's imaginations, so there's something child-like about that."
Muschietti previously told Variety his version will "update" the story and include "more surprising" terrors. The adaptation will be split into two films, with the first part to open in theaters Sept. 18, 2017.
