LOS ANGELES, April 11 (UPI) -- Kong: Skull Island released a first preview during the 2016 MTV Movie Awards pre-show Sunday.

Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson and Corey Hawkins, who play explorers in the film, took fans behind the scenes, teasing a "whole new incarnation" of King Kong.

The preview sees the group cautiously explore the giant gorilla's "uncharted" home island. Previous movies, including the 2005 film King Kong, have depicted the isle as a primordial place filled with the descendants of dinosaurs.

"King Kong is someone who's been part of motion pictures for almost 100 years," Hiddleston said. "Kong appears in the film as you've never seen him before."

"They get to this island and discover that all is not quite as it first appears," the actor added. "There are strange new creatures, mythic beasts, that come into their midst, and they have to get off the island alive."

Kong: Skull Island is an origin story set in "the Vietnam era" and opens in theaters March 10, 2017. The movie is directed by The King of Summer helmer Jordan Vogt-Roberts and co-stars Toby Kebbell, Samuel L. Jackson and John Goodman.

Hiddleston is known for playing Loki in the Marvel cinematic universe and will next reprise the role in Thor: Ragnarok. Larson recently won an Academy Award for her performance in Room, while Hawkins portrays Heath on The Walking Dead.
