LONDON, Dec. 6 (UPI) -- Ex Machina won a leading four British Independent Film Awards Sunday at a ceremony at Old Billingsgate in London. The big-screen drama scored the honors for Best British Independent Film, Best Director and Best Screenplay for Alex Garland, and Outstanding Achievement in Craft for its Visual Effects by Andrew Whitehurst.

Saoirse Ronan earned the Best Actress accolade for Brooklyn and Tom Hardy won Best Actor for his dual role as Ronnie and Reggie Kray in Legend.
Olivia Colman picked up the Best Supporting Actress statuette for The Lobster, while Brendan Gleeson took home the Best Supporting Actor trophy for Suffragette.
The Best Documentary title was awarded to Dark Horse: The Incredible True Story of Dream Alliance and Room took the prize for Best International Independent Film.
Kate Winslet was presented with the Variety Award for making "a global impact" and helping to "focus the international spotlight on the United Kingdom." The Richard Harris Award for Outstanding Contribution by an Actor to British Film was bestowed upon Chiwetel Ejiofor.
"As part of our mission to build the widest audience we can for British independent film, it is BIFA's great honor to celebrate the cream of the crop once a year at the Moët British Independent Film Awards. This year's winners speak volumes, not just for their excellence, but also for the undimmed ambition and beautiful diversity of the stories they tell," Laurence Green, chairman of the BIFA Board, said in a statement.
