LOS ANGELES, Sept. 29 (UPI) -- Leonardo DiCaprio seeks revenge against Tom Hardy in the first official trailer for the upcoming survival-drama, The Revenant.

The three-minute preview shows DiCaprio as real-life frontiersman Hugh Glass dying after he is attacked by a bear and then buried alive after his son is murdered by villain John Fritzgerald, portrayed by Tom Hardy.

When Glass awakes, he treks off into the wilderness seeking vengeance. "I ain't afraid to die anymore, I done it already," Glass says towards the end of the trailer.

Directed by Birdman helmer Alejandro G. Inarritu, the film is already creating Oscar buzz and is based on the Michael Punke novel of the same name.

The Revenant was shot entirely in natural light and will have a limited Christmas Day release before opening nationwide on Jan. 8, 2016.

In August, DiCaprio signed on to star in the upcoming film adaptation of The Devil in the White City set to be directed by Martin Scorsese.
