NEW YORK, Dec. 17 (UPI) -- Winona Ryder will return for Beetlejuice 2.

Tim Burton confirmed he will direct the 43-year-old actress in the sequel in an interview with MTV News. Ryder portrayed Lydia Deetz alongside Michael Keaton as Betelgeuse in the original 1988 film, and recently appeared in a Burton-directed music video for The Killers.

"I hadn't seen her in a while... and she was so great," he related. "I was so happy to see her. So those kinds of elements mean something to me, you know? Michael and her... and that character. I just miss it. There's some freedom about that character that I love."

In Beetlejuice, Lydia Deetz and her parents (Catherine O'Hara and Jeffrey Jones) move into a house haunted by the spirits of Adam and Barbara Maitland (Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis). The couple hire the ghost Betelgeuse to help rid them of the Deetzes, but he proves unmanageable.

Burton went on to direct Keaton in Batman and Batman Returns, while Ryder starred in such films as Edward Scissorhands and Girl, Interrupted. Burton will next release the biographical drama Big Eyes, while Ryder will appear in Experimenter with Taryn Manning and Kellan Lutz.
