Aug. 7 (UPI) -- Gwyneth Paltrow says she felt "overwhelmed" after skyrocketing to fame in the late 1990s.

The 47-year-old actress said in an essay for the September issue of InStyle that it was "crazy" to deal with her success from Shakespeare in Love and her dad's illness at the same time.

Paltrow won an Oscar for Best Actress for her role in Shakespeare in Love, which opened in theaters in 1998. Her dad, producer-director Bruce Paltrow, was diagnosed with with throat cancer the same year and died in 2002.

"I felt very honored to be on the cover [of InStyle] in January 1999," Paltrow wrote. "I was 26, and it was at a time in my life when everything was going absolutely crazy. I was becoming super famous. People started recognizing me on the street, especially after Shakespeare in Love."

"It was also a complicated time for me because my dad was going through all of his health stuff," she said. "I felt overwhelmed. I think when you're so young and something like that happens to you, it's very hard to have any perspective on what's going on. You're in a storm. In a way, I was extremely present because that's all I could be."

Paltrow described herself as being optimistic, hopeful and immature in 1999 and "still very optimistic," integrated and humble today. The actress is now parent to two children, 15-year-old daughter Apple and 13-year-old son Moses, with ex-husband Chris Martin, and married Brad Falchuk in September.

"Married life has been really good. We took a year to let everybody [in the family] take it in and let the dust settle. And now we're moving in together this month," Paltrow shared.

"I adore my husband," she gushed. "He's brilliant and deeply kind. I feel like he's a real equal too. And he pushes me in the best ways. I really like being married. It's fun."

Paltrow will next appear in the Netflix series The Politician. The show is created by Falchuk, Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, and stars Ben Platt as a politician who aspires to become president.
