June 10 (UPI) -- Singer-songwriters Sara Bareilles and Josh Groban opened Sunday's Tony Awards gala in New York by performing a tune about how they are the perfect hosts even though they've never personally won anything.

The pair sat facing each other on stage at their own pianos as they sang.

"So, let's take a moment for all of us before all our winners shine bright. Lest you forget, about 90 percent of us will leave empty-handed tonight," they sang as a curtain behind them dropped, revealing an orchestra, which played along. "So, this is for the people who lose. Because both of us have been in your shoes. Oooooooh. This one's for the loser inside of you."

Ensemble members from all of the nominated shows then danced around the stage.

CBS is broadcasting the ceremony live from Radio City Music Hall.

The Tonys honor excellence in Broadway theater.

The musicals Mean Girls and SpongeBob SquarePants led the field with 12 nominations apiece going into this weekend's competition.
