Ruby Rose: I can't 'turn people gay'

NEW YORK, April 13 (UPI) -- Ruby Rose -- famed for her androgynous beauty and role on Orange Is The New Black -- says although her popularity has caused straight women to claim they'd fallen for her, she can't actually "make" anyone a lesbian.

Speaking with Galore magazine, the actress and former MTV video jockey discussed her vibrant career, moving from Australia to the United States and her take on straight women trying to win her heart.

"When people say that I turned them gay, I just laugh, because that's not really even a possibility," Rose said.

The famously gender-fluid celebrity, whom Galore magazine noted had been as such far before it became a mainstream phenomenon, speculated the phrase "She turned me gay," -- which has become a tagline for her on Internet communities like Tumblr and in real life -- is a superficial line and nothing more.

"People will say to [Jennifer Lawrence], 'I want to be your best friend,' or to [Taylor] Swift, 'I want to be in your squad.' Everyone has got their little thing, and the catch phrase I got after Orange was, 'She turned me gay.'"

"Ultimately, that statement is just a form of endearment or a compliment, but it's not real," the model and actress said.

Earlier this month, Rose was presented with the Stephen F. Kolzak Award by Taylor Swift at the 27th annual GLAAD Media Awards. After the event, Rose reflected on "the true story of how one 'sometimes girl' (me) was surprised and brought to tears by a surprise 'always amazing and giving' girl @taylorswift."

Following her successful role in Netflix's Orange Is the New Black, Rose will appear in the films Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, John Wick 2 and xXx: The Return of Xander.
