Gwen Stefani says divorce 'completely was not in the plan'

NEW YORK, Dec. 4 (UPI) -- Gwen Stefani never intended to split from husband and Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale.

The 46-year-old singer opened up about her abrupt divorce in an interview Thursday with Elvis Duran and the Morning Show. Stefani and Rossdale first met in 1995, and split after nearly 13 years of marriage in August.

"Everybody knows pretty much what happened to me," she told the radio program. "I got a divorce, which completely was not in the plan at all. For me, it surely wasn't. [It was] a shock and a crazy, horrible explosion in my life."

Stefani previously alluded to a breaking point in her marriage that happened in February the day after the Grammys. Rossdale was subsequently rumored to have cheated, although neither party has confirmed as much.

"I had to force myself to go to the studio because I really just wanted to be in bed crying and do what you do when your life falls apart," she said of her forthcoming album. "I went to the studio ... and I was just convinced that I had to make something out of this."

Stefani released the emotional new single "Used to Love You" in October, which is widely believed to be about Rossdale. The singer performed the song later in the day on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon, accompanied by The Roots.

Stefani has since started dating fellow The Voice coach Blake Shelton, and told Duran "things are clear for the first time in a long time." The singer reunited with the 39-year-old country star this week after reportedly spending Thanksgiving apart.
