LOS ANGELES, Nov. 19 (UPI) -- American Horror Story: Hotel costume designer Lou Eyrich and her team go to great lengths to develop Lady Gaga's style as the Countess. Speaking with TV Guide, Eyrich explained the process of developing the Countess' dark, glamorous style for the popular FX series, saying her costumes are a specific mix of old and new.

"It's always a challenge when [creator Ryan Murphy] gives me broad strokes, but at the same time I knew exactly what he was talking about," she told the outlet. "If it's a modern dress, we'll do vintage jewelry from a costume house, like old rhinestone necklaces and bracelets...if it's a vintage dress, we'll put new fresh jewelry and big clunky rings and a cool Alaia boot to update it and make it more modern."
Recent episodes revealed Gaga's character is over 100 years old, and due to her living through iconic decades in fashion -- like the '20s, '50s and '80s -- her overall look must appear as if she takes the best from all eras.
Gaga's appearance in American Horror Story: Hotel was first revealed in August on the cover of Entertainment Weekly. The issue featured the Countess' killing glove -- which sports a pop-out spear from the pointer-finger -- and the actress' dramatic makeup.
"I've just been weeping while I'm here because I have returned to something I've believed in so much, which is the art of darkness," Gaga said at the time. "It's not something that everyone understands, but, for the people that do -- Horror Story fans, my fans -- there is a true connection between us, and it's a language within itself."
