Some of his famous roles included Doctor Zhivago, Funny Girl and Lawrence of Arabia, which was nominated for an Academy Award in 1962 for his work in the film.

The actor, who had over 118 IMDb acting credits, was an avid bridge player.

"Acting is my profession; bridge is my passion," he once said.

He is survived by his son, Tare, and his grandson, Omar Sharif Jr., who posted a picture of the two on his Facebook page last week and wrote, "I love you."
